Timothy W. Mackey was recently awarded the 2020-21 Eastern Kentucky University Critical Thinking Teaching Award. He is passionate about teaching ASL and bridging the communication gap between the hearing and the Deaf communities.

Kentucky’s Office of Vocational Rehabilitation Interpreters attended a Deaf-Blind Immersion Training in North Carolina in February. Six of those attending were EKU employees, alumni, or students who provide statewide interpreting services for D/HH consumers/clients of Office of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Anna Beard, 2014 EKU graduate, fell in love with American Sign Language (ASL) while in high school. Beard’s boyfriend at the time, now husband, Wade, has a younger brother who is deaf and the whole family used ASL to communicate with him. “I realized that I was part of this family and I should probably learn how to sign,” said Beard.
